It was three am where Veronica found herself sitting by the Quillayute River with red rose in her hand. Moon was shining through the clouds, it was chilly, quiet except for couple of insects chirping and she never had the courage to come to the spot where Veronica and Axel story started. It was a short lived story but in her eyes it was beautiful and saddening. Since her return to La Push, she has been busy reconnecting with her friends, getting drunk and house sitting Cullens’ house. This was her life; her sad little life after he did a number on her.
Couple years ago, what feels like an eternity, Veronica met a man that was ‘it’ for her. She was still in high school, recently moved to La Push after her mom remarried and moved away, her dad passed away when she was little and she decided to move to La Push where everything had started for her. Where here roots were and she had this feeling that her friend Natasha will be there. First couple of days were amazing, reuniting with her cousins and friends that turned family, meeting new people, she met Catcher Reeves on pink bike with Seth on first day of school. Catcher stole her heart but he never broke it; she always believed that he was a flirt and friendly so all the girls were throwing themselves at him and he didn’t seem to care. He had stood out and she thought there was something between them but turned out that their stars, universe were never aligned nor the pack would’ve accepted their relationship.
Teenager Veronica thought she knew everything and was this adult that everyone would take her seriously but in fact she was still a kid who wore her heart on her sleeve and was up for anything and everything. One of the night she was frustrated at Catcher and found herself sitting by the Quillayute river middle of night and met a man. Axel Powell. He was this hundred-odd years old who knew her great-grandfather and left the pack to do this thing. He came back, he was still hesitant about being back but Veronica was hell bent on convincing him to stay. And he did. For short period of time. In that short period, she was happy and flirty and on cloud nine.
She knew that he was going to leave and she thought she had time to convince him to stay and hoped that he would. She had imprinted on him one night and she wanted to share the world with him, grow old and have bunch of kids and they would be happy. But that dream never came true for her. The next morning and couple days after, she didn’t see Axel any where, she had called him, stayed in wolf form to see if she would hear him but nothing. Silence. It felt as she was punched in the stomach hard and got hit by a train. She was heart broken, cried and binged ate everything. Veronica made her mind and went after Axel. Looking for him every city, every state, every country in the world but no sign of him. Along the way, she did meet people who took her in while she looked around the area she was in and even went to Cullens but to her surprise, no one was there.
”I don’t know where you are but I hope you are doing well. I have been searching for you for years and it scares me to think that you may not be alive. Ax-“ Tears rolled down her cheeks and her voice cracked. She can’t do this anymore. ”I imprinted on you, I saw what life with you will be like and it was pure happiness. You left without saying goodbye, without me telling you how I truly felt and I thought you felt the same way.” Veronica always wondered about them being together and what he must have been doing. Each time she wonders about what he might have been doing, she finds herself in deep dark hole with no light in sight and no one there to help her escape. Until today.
”I came back to La Push in hopes of you being here. I waited for you but not anymore. Axel, I know you won’t hear this nor this will reach you but I need to do this in order to set myself free. I can’t keep living like this anymore. Being imprinted on you, meant always and forever not radio silence.” Her body started shaking as she sobbed. In her heart and mind, she knew that this needs to be done in order for her future. Waiting forever for a person that will never come back will destroy her. She will stay like this, sad, miserable until he comes back. She wasn’t ready to let him, they go but it had to be done. Veronica wanted to be selfish for once and do this that will bring her comfort. She was done hiding behind a fake smile, being fake happy and depression consumed her. She had tried taking her life but one way or another, she couldn’t do it. Veronica had figured that one way to kill herself was to drink her life way and pray that no one was around to save her. At least then she will be at peace.
Wiping her tears away, she sucked in chilly air and awakened every cell in her body as she stood up and walked couple steps into river. ”You never said I’m leaving. You never said goodbye. You were gone before I knew it and only you know why. In life I loved you dearly. It broke my heart to lose you but you didn’t go alone. A big part of me went with you. Today, here we lie as Veronica and Axel the couple that had a future and love. Veronica and Axel will forever be in our hearts and their memories will live on. Goodbye.” Veronica threw red rose she brought with her in the river and watched river stream take the last token of Veronica and Axel.
Veronica felt numb after funeral of Veronica and Axel. She felt weight being lifted off her shoulder, her body relaxed for the first time in years without alcohol in her system. When she couldn’t see the rose anymore, she turned around and walked back to where she was sitting and sat on the ground, pulling her legs closer to her body and rested her chin on her knees. This was the closure she needed years ago but stubborn that she was, she was scared. Veronica didn’t know how she got the courage, maybe learning that Natasha had cliff dived and came back as new person or the fact that she wanted to start living her life. Whatever it was, she was grateful for not backing out.
